Ü ber ein Drittel der aktiven Tageszeit verbringen wir im Büro. Dass in dem Zusam-
menhang eine Umgebung mit hoher Aufenthaltsqualität von Bedeutung ist, sehen
David McGahon und Greg Walton von Studio McW aus London als selbstverständlich an.
Zum zehnjährigen Bestehen ihres Büros haben sie einen Ort geschaffen, der ihr Arbeiten
in allen Elementen widerspiegelt und so nicht nur ein Büro mit Wohnzimmer-Flair, son-
dern auch einen Showroom darstellt. Ganz nach ihrer eigenen Philosophie überzeugt die
Gestaltung durch rohe Ehrlichkeit, Funktionalität und die verwendeten Materialien. Bei
Letzteren legt der Entwurf zum einen Wert auf einen natürlichen Ursprung: So ergänzen
Eichenholz und Kork die offenen Backsteinwände aus dem Bestand. Zum anderen erwei-
tern haltbare Oberflächen wie Edelstahl oder Keramikfliesen die taktile Palette. Domi-
niert durch eine gemeinsam genutzte Tischreihe, die Platz für alle Mitarbeitenden bietet,
erlaubt die Bürofläche eine Einsicht in das alltägliche Schaffen des Teams. Schwere graue
Vorhänge, angelehnt an den industriellen Charakter der Stahlträger, und eine eingestellte
Regalwand trennen sowohl die Sanitär- und Sozialbereiche als auch eine private Arbeits-
und Meetingzone ab. Alle vorgenommenen Maßnahmen sind in den angemieteten
Räumlichkeiten reversibel geplant und erfüllen durch den Einsatz von natürlichen und
teilweise recycelten Materialien einen hohen Nachhaltigkeitsanspruch.
W e spend more than a third of our active daytime hours in the office. Against this
background, David McGahon and Greg Walton of Studio McW in London consider
it self-evident that an environment offering a high quality of stay is essential. To mark the
tenth anniversary of their practice, they have created a space that reflects their way of
working in every element, functioning not only as an office with a living-room atmosphe-
re but also as a showroom. In keeping with their own philosophy, the design impresses
with raw honesty, functionality and the materials employed. With regard to the latter, the
scheme places emphasis on natural origins: oak and cork complement the existing expo-
sed brickwork. At the same time, durable surfaces such as stainless steel and ceramic
tiles expand the materials with a pleasant surface feel. Organised around a shared row
of tables providing space for all members of staff, the office layout offers insight into the
team’s everyday creative work. Heavy grey curtains, echoing the industrial character of
the steel beams, and a freestanding shelving wall separate the sanitary and social areas
as well as a more private workspace and meeting zone. All interventions within the ren-
ted premises have been conceived as reversible. The use of natural and partly recycled
materials further underscores the project’s strong sustainability focus.
