JUNG VON MATT SPORTS
IN HAMBURG
Entwurf • Design Anja Richter Architects, Hamburg
von • by Annette Weckesser
C reative minds and raw industrial charm are known to be a perfect match. Exposed
materials, lofty ceilings, large windows and expansive floor areas create the airy
atmosphere that thinkers and makers appreciate. On top of that, adaptive reuse is sus-
tainable and increasingly on trend. Jung von Matt Sports, part of the Jung von Matt Group,
has moved into a former corset factory in Hamburg’s Karolinenviertel neighbourhood.
The self-proclaimed “athletes of advertising” commissioned Hamburg-based architect
Anja Richter to redesign the basement and raised ground floor. Across 960 square met-
res, she distilled the brand identity of the successful advertising strategists into a coherent
spatial concept. In the 4.6-metre-high foyer of the raised ground floor, visitors are greeted
by an almost room-height “torso” of a Trojan horse – the agency’s emblem and a meta-
phor for its unexpected brand concepts. In the meeting area, wallpaper conceived by Julia
Ulmer (Jung von Matt) and a table shaped like two mirrored spearheads echo the motif
of Troy. Throughout the space, references to Jung von Matt Sports’ field of expertise are
omnipresent: the boldly illuminated “SPORTS” lettering on the ceiling of the black tunnel
in the basement, shelves filled with trophies, framed jerseys, cups, a basketball hoop –
and, of course, the Sports Bar, the social heart of the agency.
