ZUM GOLDENEN
HIRSCHEN IN STUTTGART
When colour and movable textiles cleverly define spatial
transitions without detracting from the overall flow of the
space, a great deal has been achieved with simple means.
The fan-shaped, spacious interior of the Stuttgart agency
Zum goldenen Hirschen extends over several levels and
offers visual connections. A world in flow, where life and
work are able to merge seamlessly.
P reviously used by the equally well-known Stuttgart architecture firm
haas cook zemmrich Studio2050 as traditional office premises, after
just one month for the necessary conversion, a surprising and comple-
tely new spatial cosmos has been created here for the Zum goldenen
Hirschen advertising agency. This was achieved through essentially very
subtle interventions in the existing design, leaving the purely space-defi-
ning and structural components – ceilings, various levels, walls, stairs
– intact. Instead, colour is used like a material, as like a component. You
walk from one room to another, looking for the right place, without ever
touching a single door handle. Flexible workspaces are complemented
Grundriss Untergeschoss • Basement floor plan by lounge areas, an integrated kitchen and informal meeting rooms,
creating a balance between concentration, exchange and relaxation. The
colours, which are used across several dimensions, each create their
own unique atmosphere and remain true to their respective effects, as
attributed by experience. Blue and green for concentration and calm,
red for stimulation and energy. The choice of colours for the furniture
is also consistently subject to this sophisticated conceptual principle.
Further in line with this principle, a deep, rich red immerses the com-
munal kitchen area in a stimulating, warm atmosphere. Because some-
times, at least according to popular belief, really good ideas arise unex-
pectedly and often not directly at the workplace. Hippmann Architects
offer a fluid cosmos for this purpose, merely providing possibilities for
the use of space rather than fixed solutions. The uniform grey flooring
gives the whole space a pleasant sense of grounding and stability. Inci-
dentally, the Zum goldenen Hirschen agency’s new address is directly
opposite the Neue Liederhalle, an architectural icon from 1956 designed
by Adolf Abel and Rolf Gutbrod that is known far beyond the regional
boundaries. Anyone searching in vain for the gold of the “golden deer”,
as the English translation of the name would be, in the agency will find
it across the street. Here, golden mosaic stones sparkle in competition
with each other. Who knows, maybe the golden deer – or is it the gold-
Grundriss Erdgeschoss • Ground floor plan ass? – takes a trip across the street from time to time.
