                                                                                    The Ippolito Fleitz Group has designed the MAX Show
                                                                                    Office located in Hangzhou. It is part of a large technolo-
                                                                                    gy park and presents working environments that cater to
                                                                                    the specific needs of the e-commerce industry. They are
                                                                                    characterized by clear lines, but also by rhythm and dyna-
                                                                                    mism. In addition, the question of what a contemporary
                                                                                    management style should look like was explored.


                                                                                    H   angzhou is located about 190 km southwest of Shanghai. Marco
                                                                                        Polo, who travelled to China, is said to have once described the
                                                                                    city as “the most beautiful and magnificent city in the world”. In his day,
                                                                                    in the 13th century, Hangzhou had the largest port in the world. Today,
                                                                                    the city is still an important centre of production and trade and is con-
                                                                                    sidered a hub of Chinese e-commerce, with around 55,000 companies
                                                                                    from the industry based here. Many of them are located in the 264,000
                                                                                    m² MAX Technology Park in the Qiantang district. This is also where the
                                                                                    MAX Show Office, a showroom for workplace design for young, creative
                                                                                    e-commerce companies, is located. The Ippolito Fleitz Group was com-

                                                                                    The lobby on the ground floor makes a strong first impression on visitors:
                                                                                    in the 7.5-metre-high room, the reception, lounge, exhibition areas, mee-
                                                                                    ting rooms and an auditorium are layered to form an impressive multi-
                                                                                    functional ensemble. Playful and creative, the lobby picks up the energy
                                                                                    and motivational approach of the industry to make a lasting first impres-
                                                                                    sion. The precise rhythm of the modular ceiling elements ensures order,
                                                                                    while the deliberately offset functional areas below are cause for amaze-
                                                                                    ment. The architects also designed the areas for concentrated work and
                                                                                    creative communication on the upper floors with an atmospheric inter-
                                                                                    play of strictness and dynamism. This duality is reflected in the choice of
                                                                                    materials and colours, among other things: natural textures meet tech-
                                                                                    nological aesthetics, vibrant colours meet calm nuances. The specific
                                                                                    requirements of the tech- and e-commerce industries are addressed by
                                                                                    integrating glass high-tech laboratories and digital studios for video- and
                                                                                    audio recordings into the workplace concepts, for example. Finally, the
                                                                                    design addresses the question of whether a special management style
                                                                                    is also necessary in a future-oriented working environment. The state-
                                                                                    ment is clear: the architects see the spatial sculpture on the fifth floor
                                                                                    as a metaphor for an open, caring attitude towards employees – its slats
                                                                                    spread protectively across the room like the branches of a tree, a meta-
