E in ehemaliges Industriegebäude aus den 1960er-Jahren in Athen wurde von
IV Architects zum Headquarter für das international agierende Innovationsun-
ternehmen ICON umgebaut. Dabei orientiert sich die Neugestaltung der Innenräume
am bestehenden Raster des Stahlbetonskelettbaus und schafft flexible Grundrisse,
welche die Anpassung an sich wandelnde Bedürfnisse berücksichtigen. Das Herzstück
bildet die zentrale „Plaza“ als Begegnungs- und Kommunikationsfläche. Um sie herum
sind die einzelnen Büros angeordnet, jeweils natürlich belichtet und mit Blick nach
draußen. Ein in die Dreifachverglasung integrierter Mikrosonnenschutz minimiert die
Blendung und den Wärmeeintrag. Um die Blickbeziehungen zwischen den Arbeits-
plätzen sowie jeweils zur Plaza hin zu gewährleisten und den Mitarbeitenden den-
noch eine gewisse Privatsphäre zu ermöglichen, sind die Trennwände im Wechsel als
Voll- oder Glaswände ausgebildet. Niedrige Raumteiler mit integrierten Regalen und
Pflanzen gliedern die Open-Space-Büros, dienen als flexibler Sichtschutz und beein-
flussen die Raumatmosphäre positiv. Ausreichend Tageslicht sowie eine Kombination
aus dimmbarer direkter und indirekter Beleuchtung im Rahmen eines zirkadianen
Beleuchtungskonzepts in allen Büros und Aufenthaltsbereichen sowie akustisch wirk-
same Oberflächen, erhöhen die Aufenthaltsqualität zusätzlich.
A former industrial building dating from the 1960s in Athens has been converted
into the headquarters of the internationally active innovation company ICON. The
architecture firm IV Architects, based in Ioulis on the island of Kea, is responsible for
the transformation. The redesign of the interiors follows the grid of the existing rein-
forced-concrete skeleton structure, creating flexible layouts that accommodate adaptation
to changing needs. At the heart of the building lies the central “plaza”, conceived as a
space for encounters and communication. The individual offices are arranged around it,
each naturally lit and with views of the outside areas. A micro sun-shading system integ-
rated into the triple glazing reduces glare and heat gain. To maintain visual connections
between the workplaces and towards the plaza while still ensuring a degree of privacy
for the employees, the partitions alternate between solid and glazed walls. Low partitions
with integrated shelving and plants structure the open-plan offices, providing flexible
screening and enhancing the spatial atmosphere. Generous daylight, together with a com-
bination of dimmable direct and indirect lighting based on a circadian lighting concept in
all offices and common areas, as well as acoustically effective surfaces, further increase
the quality of stay in the working environment.
