Blackbox venue. Rather than starting from programme and function, design began with the
available formwork elements. Their geometry, availability and transportability were asses-
sed first; only if technical and logistical feasibility was ensured were the resulting design
proposals presented to potential clients. Programme and function followed later. A citi-
zens’ survey had identified the need for a youth meeting place, offering interpretative free-
dom. The composition of twelve formwork elements creates a cross-shaped interior with
two narrow entrances and an almost sacred vault-like ceiling, lit by large windows and an
indirect skylight. The protective outer shell forms five seating niches with integrated tim-
ber benches while concealing direct views into the interior. Reusing the station formwork
enabled an otherwise unaffordable architecture. The three-dimensionally curved timber
surfaces were originally milled from thick laminated CLT blocks using robotic fabrication.
After manually removing the former boat varnish and sanding the surfaces, damascene-li-
ke patterns emerged from the layered timber. Excluding foundations, the pavilion consists
almost entirely of biogenic, largely reused material. The formwork elements form the pri-
mary structure; the outer shell is reversibly screwed solid timber. No adhesives or coatings
were used, and all wood remains untreated. The Reallabor Ingersheim thus contributes
