Seit der Unabhängigkeit Kroatiens von Jugoslawien im Jahr 1991 ist
Zagreb die Hauptstadt des Landes und dessen unangefochtenes politi-
sches, wirtschaftliches und kulturelles Zentrum. Im Großraum Zagreb
leben heute rund eine Million Menschen. Die Stadt blickt auf eine
wechselvolle Geschichte zurück: Durch ihre Lage auf dem Westbalkan
stand sie jahrhundertelang im Fokus von Großmächten wie Öster-
reich-Ungarn oder dem Osmanischen Reich. Und dies lässt sich im
Stadtbild auf Schritt und Tritt entdecken, wie Jasmin Jouhar berichtet.

Since Croatia’s independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, Zagreb has
been the country’s capital and its undisputed political, economic and
cultural centre. Around one million people now live in the greater
Zagreb area. The city looks back on a turbulent history: due to its
